How to Measure Your Walls for Wallpaper

A few minutes with a tape measure is all it takes. Follow the steps below to make sure you order exactly the right panels for your space.

1

Measure

Measure wall width and height in inches. A metal tape measure gives the most accurate results — avoid cloth or retractable fabric tapes, which can stretch.

2

Add Buffer

Add 4 inches (approx. 10 cm) to both width and height. This gives you room to trim at the ceiling, baseboard, and corners during installation.

3

Calculate Panels

All our panels are 24 inches wide. Divide your total width by 24 and round up — that’s how many panels you need.

Standard Walls

Measure the full width and height of the wall from edge to edge. Write down both numbers before moving on. We produce panels at exactly the measurements you specify when ordering, so always add 4 inches to both width and height — this trim allowance makes installation much easier.

Multiple Walls

Measure the width of each wall separately, then add them together. Add 2–4 inches per wall to allow for flexibility at each corner. Measure height at the tallest point across all walls and add 4 inches. There’s no need to order separately per wall — enter the combined total width when ordering.

Walls with Doors, Windows or Other Obstacles

Measure the full width and height of the wall — do not subtract for doors or windows. All obstacles will be cut out cleanly during installation. Measuring the complete wall and adding 4 inches to both dimensions ensures you have enough material to work around frames and edges without running short.

Sloped Walls & Staircases

For walls with angled ceilings, attic spaces, or staircase walls, measure at the widest point for width and the tallest point for height. Add 4 inches to both measurements. The sloped portions will be trimmed to fit during installation — you never need to try to measure along the angle itself.

Which Panel Height Should I Choose?

Panel SizePanel HeightFits Ceilings Up ToBest For
24″ × 76″6 ft 4 in~6 ftAccent walls, partial coverage, low areas
24″ × 100″8 ft 4 in~8 ftMost bedrooms & living rooms (standard US ceiling)
24″ × 112″9 ft 4 in~9 ftOpen-plan spaces, newer construction
24″ × 124″10 ft 4 in~10 ftHigh ceilings, commercial & luxury interiors
Not sure? The standard US ceiling height is 8 ft — the 24″×100″ panel is our most popular size. When in doubt, choose the next size up: a few extra inches to trim is always better than coming up short.

How Many Panels Do I Need?

All Chapter Walls panels are 24 inches wide. To find how many you need, divide your total wall width by 24 and round up to the nearest whole number.

Panels Needed round up

Example: A wall that is 120 inches (10 ft) wide — 120 ÷ 24 = 5 panels.
A wall that is 130 inches wide — 130 ÷ 24 = 5.4, round up to 6 panels.

Walls with doors or windows? Still calculate using the full wall width. Panels are cut to fit around openings during installation — there’s no need to subtract for them.
