What is chinoiserie?
Chinoiserie is a European decorative style from the 17th and 18th centuries, inspired by imported Chinese porcelain, silks and painted wallpapers. Its signature motifs are birds, flowering branches and garden scenes, usually in an elegant, airy arrangement. Blue and white is the most classic palette, which is why chinoiserie sits so naturally next to toile and blue-and-white ceramics.
Where chinoiserie wallpaper works best
Chinoiserie is at home in dining rooms, bedrooms and powder rooms, and it is a favorite for entryways because it makes a strong first impression without feeling heavy. It suits traditional and grandmillennial rooms, and it softens a modern space when paired with clean-lined furniture and brass or rattan accents.
Peel and stick or traditional?
Every design is printed to order in 24-inch-wide panels, in heights from 76 to 124 inches, and ships in 2–5 business days. Peel and stick is removable and renter-friendly, while traditional wallpaper is the better choice for a long-term install. Our material comparison guide explains the difference, and our measuring guide helps you work out how many panels you need. Blue tones vary from screen to screen, so we recommend a sample first: choose the 7×7" or 24×24" sample in the Size menu on any product page.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between chinoiserie and toile?
Toile tells a story in scenes, usually printed in one color on a pale ground. Chinoiserie focuses on birds, branches and gardens inspired by Asian art. Our blue-and-white bird toiles combine the two.
Is chinoiserie wallpaper still in style?
Yes. It has been used on walls for more than 300 years and has had a strong revival alongside grandmillennial style, so it rarely looks dated.
Does peel and stick wallpaper damage walls?
Not on properly prepared walls. Read our honest answer.
